Personal and organizational growth and development are important factors in the achievement of success and happiness. All people want to succeed, but not all people are willing to do the hard work of success.
Success never just happens, it is always the result of focuses, sustained, and intelligent effort. Those who do the hard work will live the dream. Those who do not do the hard work will live the fantasy—everlasting dreaming with no hope of fulfillment.
But success is not simply a matter of hard work. It is also a matter of applying smart strategies. Hard work combined with applications of good success strategies will make success and achievable reality.
Finding a personal development and success strategy that works for you is crucial to achieving your destiny.
The Right Success Strategy: Give Yourself a Fighting Chance
There are many personal and organizational growth and development models available. Many are good, and many more are not so good. Many address one piece of the success puzzle, while others take a more comprehensive approach to personal development and success.
All too often we are forced to piece together a puzzle of strategies from various sources and then hope that the hodgepodge will work in our favor. Many people can do this well, but it can take a lifetime to figure it all out.
You don’t want to take a lifetime to figure out how to succeed and be happy. It is much better to figure it out early and to enjoy the fruit of your success as soon as possible. Give yourself a fighting chance by finding strategies that will work for you in your situation.
A Good Strategy Acknowledges Complexity
Joyce Carol Oates said, “Life and people are complex.” She is right, although that is not really a news flash for any of us. We all know that life and people are complex. And quite frankly, we all wish it was not so.
Life is complex. People are complex. Work is complex. Business is complex. Success is complex. The application of strategies is complex. Personal growth is complex. The world is a complex place to live, work, and play.
If complexity was not so prevalent, then success and happiness would be a lot easier to find. As it is, most people struggle to find fulfillment in all three areas—life, work, and play. (See previous four articles for more on “complexity.”)
Acknowledging this complexity is the first step to overcoming it. But once you acknowledge complexity, you must adopt strategies that will best help you to overcome it.
Choosing the Right Developmental Strategy
Because of the complexity involved with achieving success and happiness it is important to choose a good developmental strategy. It is never too late to make this decision. It is only too late when you decide not to.
However, not all developmental strategies or success models are created equal. Some are very good, and some not so much.
Any good success strategy and developmental model will acknowledge the complexity of people, life, and work. It will not propose a “one key” fits all approach to success or growth that will never work for all people—this is always far too simplistic to be helpful. If you find one that does, run as fast as you can.
Choose a strategy that works for you. And whatever you do, at the very least, choose a strategy, or a source of help, that will acknowledge the complexity of life, people, and work. Do not choose one that will try to minimize the difficulties involved in personal growth and success, and in so doing sell you something that is weak and ineffective.
A Comprehensive Approach to Success and Development is Needed
No one would deny that people are made up of a complex combination of traits. This reality is further complicated by that fact that no two people are alike. This means that no one idea or strategy will work for all people, equally, under all circumstances.
This challenge is intensified by the reality that there are many aspects to personal and organizational growth and development that are necessary for success and happiness. No one can focus on a single issue and expect complete results.
Simplistic Personal Development Models
It is important to realize that a comprehensive approach to success and development is needed because we all gravitate toward the simplest model. We prefer the simple over the complex, the easy road over the more difficult. We would all like to experience success, and the sooner the better. And we would also like it to be as easy as possible—I know I would.
Why are we like this? We are like this because we are all inherently lazy—and yes, me included. Combine our inherent laziness with the fact that we all desperately want to succeed, and we will inevitably look for the route of least resistance.
We all want to discover the fastest and easiest road to success and happiness, but that road does not exist. It just doesn’t work that way. Nothing worth having is ever that easy. If anyone tells you otherwise they are trying to sell you something, and they are hoping you will be gullible enough to buy into their silly ideas. Unfortunately for them, you are not that gullible.
