Your personal development and success are important! How ridiculously obvious is that statement? This being the case—that your personal development and success are important—we have a tendency to gravitate toward the simplest personal development and success models—the ones that promises easy success or a one “key to success” approach.
We all want to discover the fastest and easiest road to success and happiness, but that road does not exist. It just doesn’t work that way. What we really need, is a developmental system combined with a success strategy that works.
Choosing the right developmental model and success strategy is crucial to achieving your destiny. You will give yourself a fighting chance for success if you find a strategy that focuses on the development of skills with the enhancement of peace (well-being or wellness) simultaneously.
Two Common Approaches to Personal Growth and Development
Personal development and self improvement strategies topically follow one of two approaches. The first developmental approach focuses on the development of skills, while the second approach focuses on the development of personal well-being or wellness—what I refer to as “peace.” One deals primarily with exterior life (skills), while the other focuses primarily on the inner life (peace, well-being, or wellness).
The Development of Personal Skills
The most popular approach to personal growth and development is the development of skills. We strive to develop the skills we need to succeed in our career of choice, or our area of interest.
The goal here is to develop existing strengths while fortifying areas of weakness. People will spend considerable effort—and perhaps finances—to develop the skills that they are lacking, or those they feel will most benefit them at any given time. The hope is that this will better equip them for success—a good idea by the way.
Motivational speakers and personal development writers will become “experts” in a given skill, so that they can help people develop in those areas. The development of skills will include such things as: administrative skills, time management skills, leadership skills, team building skills, communication skills, and so many more.
There is nothing wrong with this approach, as the development of skills is important, and it is good to have experts to draw from. But the development of skills alone represents an incomplete approach to personal growth and development, and therefore it does not represent a holistic success strategy.
The Development of Personal Peace
Human developmental strategies most often center on the development of skills. But there is another less prominent developmental approach. This approach focuses on the enhancement of well-being, wellness, or what I will refer to as “peace.”
Here attention is given to strengthening the individual’s inner life, strength, and resilience, rather than to strengthening external skills. The focus here is on the management of energy, stress, depression, anxiety, worry, etc. All are things that relate to our inner workings.
There are “experts” to help us enhance this aspect of our development. Speakers and writers will become experts in developing the inner life by focusing on such things as: personal health, positive thinking, stress management, depression, anxiety, and other topics dealing with the inner life.
Once again, there is nothing wrong with this approach. In fact, it is absolutely necessary for the achievement of success. It is impossible to succeed without the inner resilience to function at a high level despite personal circumstances or external stresses.
But the development of personal peace, as important as it is, also represents an incomplete approach to personal growth and development. Therefore, on its own, it does not represent a holistic success strategy any more than the development of skills does.
The Dynamic Duo: The Development of Skills and the Enhancement of Peace
Batman and Robin are the original “Dynamic Duo.” The two were inseparable, and always looked out for the needs and best interest of the other. They were more effective together than they were apart, and the bond between them was unbreakable.
In exactly the same way, the development of skill and the enhancement of peace (well-being) work best together in the developmental process. You cannot separate the two, nor is it wise to elevate one over the other in the journey to success.
The most effective strategies will address the development of skills and the enhancement of peace (well-being or wellness) simultaneously. This is the most effective way to optimize people so that they achieve their maximum potential.
It is the combination of these two efforts that will result in success and happiness. Focus on the development of skills alone, and you will experience stress and burnout that will stall or negate your efforts at achieving success and happiness. You will also lose the ability to enjoy your accomplishments.
On the other hand, if you focus solely on your experience of peace, well-being, or wellness, then you will not develop the necessary skills to achieve your potential in the pursuit of success. Both skill and peace (well-being or wellness) are necessary in the pursuit of success and happiness.
When you develop skills and peace (well-being or wellness) together, then you will have the external ability to succeed and the internal resilience to perseveres and overcome every challenge you face.
G Strategies™ | Growth Strategies for Success™
Developing skills and enhancing peace simultaneously is a crucial step in the journey to success—perhaps the most important. They are both absolutely essential in the search for success and well-being.
Ignore one in the favor of the other and you invite burnout and mediocrity. Combine the two and you will soon find the beginning of a successful and happy life.
Do you have the skills necessary to achieve success in a complicated world and complex economy? Do you have the inner strength and the emotional health to ensure that you don’t crash and burn under the stress of a frantic and unforgiving personal and professional environment? These questions are equally important in your quest for success and happiness. Don’t fall into the trap of promoting one at the expense of the other.
Engage the development of skills and the enhancement of peace (well-being or wellness) simultaneously if you want to give yourself the best possible chance for success.
Keep striving for greatness!
