You are important! That statement is so important that it deserves to be stated more strongly. You are “vitally” important. In fact, you are the most important person in your life. So why would you not invest in yourself?
We would all do well to adopt the attitude of the amazing martial arts icon Bruce Lee who said,
Personal growth, personal development, self improvement, and self help are all terms that express the value of people, and the importance of growth and development in the achievement of success and happiness. And yet these terms represent concepts that are often down played, and even mocked.
If you are reading this then that statement does not likely apply to you, but that would make you a member of a small and diminishing group of people.
To extend this thought a little further, remarkably few business leaders seriously pursue the active training of their people. And yet people are their greatest assets. The most effective way to build an organization is to develop the people involved in the organization. Everything else is secondary.
The Importance of Developing People
As a success life coach and motivational keynote speaker I am constantly faced with the challenge of communicating the idea that the development of people is the most crucial factor contributing to the betterment of life; the achievement of personal success and happiness; as well as the achievement of corporate success and the development of a peaceful corporate environment; the enhancement of human experience; and the enrichment of our world—making it a better place to live, work, and play.
Am I overstating this? Absolutely not! The development of human beings is the foundation of a progressive society. To say that this is not true is tantamount to saying the sun is not hot. It certainly is hot, and people development certainly is crucial. Developing people is the foundation of an advanced and prosperous nation. It is the basis of a successful business and organization. It is the bedrock of personal success. It is the fundamental principle for personal and corporate success and happiness.
The Urgency of Human Development
Is there an “urgency” to develop people? Nothing could be more true. This concept is really quite elementary. Without the development of people we would still be living in caves, protecting ourselves with stone knives, and communicating in grunts and the waving of our arms. We would be hitting each other over the heads with spiked clubs to resolve conflict. We would be clothing ourselves with animal skins, and walking would be the sole form of transportation. Need I go on?
Human development is vital, crucial, critical, integral, essential, strategic, necessary, foundational, and indispensable to all that we are and all that we wish to become. Did I miss an adjective? I hope not. This is not very good writing, but I do hope it makes the point as strongly as possible.
There is no other bottom line. As such, it would be advantageous for each of us to give as much time, effort, priority, and emphasis to the development of our greatest assets—ourselves and our people.
Priorities are a priority. Never forget it. Without priorities we will spin our wheels in indecision and inactivity. Without the “right” priorities we will wander aimlessly, with no clear direction, and no significant progress. We will be destined for mediocrity.
Setting the right priorities, or prioritizing our lives, is a
powerful component of achieving success and happiness. Priorities will keep us on track, and ensure our success.
Without the right priorities people will falter in their search for success. They will focus on irrelevant goals, unimportant issues, and unproductive actions. Priorities keep us focusing on what is important so that we continually move forward in the right direction.
People have a tendency to fixate on what is urgent rather than what is important. That is never a good thing. Always give precedence to the important. The urgent will only serve to distract you, and get you off track. Unfortunately, many people have their priorities jumbled. The tyranny of the urgent often rules.
Personal and organizational growth and development is, and must always be, priority one in the pursuit of success and happiness. The moment you loose sight of this, you jeopardize the likelihood of success. It is time to drastically change your priorities. Your personal and organizational success depends on it. Always put growth and development first.
Human development is so important that when we ignore it, we are basically communicating, by our actions, that we have little interest in success or happiness. I’ve been around the block enough times to know that that is not true of anyone. We all want to be successful and happy. And yet the vast majority of people continue to ignore the one thing that will most help them achieve their goals and desires.
Given the universal desire for success, and the importance of growth and development in its achievement, it is surprising how few people make any effort to explore the possibilities of personal or organization growth and development.
Women are much more open to this idea of personal growth, and often wish their life partner would make a greater effort in this regard. But even so, relatively few women seriously explore their own growth and development. This is a travesty, because this lack of interest in self and corporate improvement ensures that people will never achieve their potential or their destiny.
No one purposely strives to become less than they can be, or to achieve only a small portion of their potential. People don’t aspire to live a menial existence. And yet by ignoring personal development and self improvement, that is exactly what they are doing.
Success does not come to those who make the least amount of effort, and do the least amount of work. If you wish to succeed and find happiness, you have to take yourself seriously. Dedicate yourself to personal development and self improvement. Do this as all cost, because you are worth the investment in yourself.
