Ok, I get it! Life is complex—as indicated in the last two articles. How does that help me? What am I supposed to do with that information?
When you acknowledge and respect the complex nature of personal growth and success it will put them within your grasp. Without this recognition, a person will accept incomplete and inadequate success principles. They will ignore too many aspects of their personal development, and their growth will suffer for it.
No Simplistic Solutions for Complex Problems
It would be absurd to throw simplistic solutions at complex problems. For example, throwing large sums of money at world hunger is not going to solve anything. It’s a simplistic approach to a complex problem—such an approach will always fail.
In the same way, applying simplistic strategies to personal growth and success is equally ridiculous. A shallow view of personal growth, personal development, and self improvement will surely fail. Trying to find a single “key to success” is a complete waste of time.
You are a unique and complex person. Knowledge of this reality must guide your strategies in your quest for success. Furthermore, the knowledge that success and development are also complex should further influence your strategies. This will help you achieve a higher level of personal success and development.
If we ignore complexity we risk adopting wrong strategies or following bad advice. Many people do not succeed because they attempt to apply strategies that do not consider the many interrelated components of people, circumstances, growth, and success. Thus they are unable to form successful strategies for achieving their goals and desires.
Complex issues do not require complex solutions, but they do require that the solutions acknowledge and respect existing complexity. Genuine success strategies must therefore recognize the complexities of personal growth and success.
The Failure of Self Help
There is no lack of self help books and material in the world. A few of these are very good, but many are unhelpful and fail to deliver much more than hot air—this is a painful thing for a motivational speaker and success life coach to admit.
Most often they fail to deliver because they take a far too simplistic approach to complex issues. There is nothing worse than being told that the author’s way is the only way. Especially, when he or she has no clue who you are or what circumstances you are dealing with. It’s both arrogant and presumptions.
While there are universal principles that we all can and should apply, there is no one principle or system that will work for all people in all circumstances. That is a simplistic approach to the complexity of people and circumstance.
Self help material gets a bad rap because much of it offers a simplistic approach. I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard the words, “It just doesn’t work.” Well, maybe that didn’t work at that time. But perhaps there is a good reason it did not work.
Most often it “did not work” because the complexity of life, people, and success has been overlooked. When complexity is not acknowledged, then guidance will be irrelevant to the person and situation. “Answers” become flippant and unhelpful. Complexity must be acknowledged and respected.
Success Strategies Acknowledge Complexity
A successful strategy cannot take a simplistic approach to a complex problem. It’s ok to introduce simplicity, but the complexity—the existence of many interrelated components—must be acknowledged in the process.
There is a need for success strategies that recognize that people and circumstances are too complex for pat or flippant advice.
There is nothing worse than being given a simplistic answer to a complex problem. It’s an absurd proposition. Depressed? Take a pill. Overweight? Stop eating so much. Want to quit smoking? Wear a patch. Having marriage issues? Compromise. Really? That’s the best you can do?
What is wrong with these strategies? Everything! They don’t take in the big picture, and therefore offer an incomplete, faulty, and perhaps even harmful strategy.
There is no question that life, people, and success are complex. This means that we need a system of strategies that recognizes this complexity, and takes it into consideration.
It really bothers me when people try to sell me a simplistic approach to something so that they can sell a book. People will buy the book, because we all look for the easy road. The problem is that the easy road does not exist.
The Essence of Human Optimization™: Strategies for Complexity
Any system of strategies for success and happiness must take the complex nature of the developmental process seriously. Human Optimization™ does this. It recognizes that people are complex beings, and that they live and work in a complex world.
“Human Optimization™” is a system of thought and strategies that will increase the potential and effectiveness of an individual, in order to maximize his or her ability to achieve personal success and happiness as he or she strives to have a positive impact on as many people in the world as possible. In this way, Human Optimization™ extends beyond the optimization of individuals to the optimization of the human race as a whole.
Your success and happiness will rise or fall depending on your ability to be what you were born to be, and to do what you were born to do. Your greatest challenge in life is to understand your strengths, and to learn how to maximize your potential. This should be your life’s pursuit. Human Optimization™ can help you.
You matter, but so do the many people who share this planet with you. Organizational success is dependent on the growth and development of the people in the organization. A team will only be as strong as the people on the team. An organization will only achieve what the people in the organization can achieve. The greatest idea will fail miserably if the people behind it do not strive to be the best that they can be.
The bottom line is this—and it is true without exception—people are your greatest asset. So invest in them wisely and without reservation.
Human Optimization™ is a system of strategies designed do all of this and more. It recognizes the complex nature of things, and is designed to optimize families, teams, businesses, organizations, associations, communities, nations, and even the world we live in—by optimizing people. It is the process of helping people to become the best that they can be.
G Strategies™ | Growth Strategies for Success™
